Jewish Women for Child Refugees (JWCR) Taking Action: a Plan to Send Lawyers to Artesia N.M.
The Crisis of Child Refugees from Central America
We all have heard about the recent crisis of children refugees from Central America seeking asylum in the United States. These children are fleeing unspeakable violence, and have risked their lives to come here, because remaining in their countries of origin is a death sentence.
A Jewish Commitment
While the question of immigration reform is a complicated and divisive issue in American politics, as Jews, we remember a time in our recent history when it was Jewish parents who put their children on trains and buses, hoping they would find safety at the end of their journey.
Now in the relative safety of the United States, we have the opportunity to pay forward the kindness that was shown to the Jewish people.
Children Refugees are Being Deported
We found out that many of the children from Central America are now being sent back to their countries and those are mostly children who are not represented by lawyers to argue their case.
Taking Action: a Plan to Send Lawyers to Artesia N.M.
Seven Rochester lawyers have agreed to donate their time to represent the children. They are all Spanish speaking, Federally admitted, trained lawyers ready to go to Artesia, New Mexico to increase the number of attorneys available to represent children asylum seekers. We would like to raise $7000 to send all seven; the estimated cost for a lawyer for five days is $1000. The Legal Aid Society of Rochester has agreed to be the umbrella organization for our donations.
Please mail any donations to The Legal Aid Society of Rochester, Attn: Bill Davis at 1 West Main Street, Suite 800, Rochester NY 14614. Any checks should say “JWCR” on them in the memo line, and we will ensure they receive a receipt for tax purposes. Please let us know if you have any questions. We are so grateful for your generosity.
