This is the story of a man who took no responsibility for his mistakes or misdeeds or breaking the law. In a life strung together by bankruptcy, cheating, lying, and illegal practices he was surrounded by people who fixed things to allow him to come out unscathed. The man could rely on those who were willing, for a price, to make sure that he would never have to take responsibility for bankruptcies, sexual assaults, racist practices, breaking contracts and engaging in a range of shady dealings.
The man with a coterie of fixers was elected president of the United States in 2016. He had good reason to believe that he was finally at the pinnacle of entitlement, above the law. It was shortly after he came to live in the White House that the entire government apparatus would become his official fixers.
We can’t really blame the man because for much of his seventy years he had fixers at his disposal that allowed him to proclaim when he was running for the presidency that if he shot someone on Fifth Avenue nothing would happen to him. People like him are born to wealthy families that habitually cultivate a culture of entitlement and are always supported by a floating den of fixers. In the world of fixers money is necessary, this is how the entitled hire shyster lawyers and evade accountability. Yet this man is in the habit of inducing fear and using unbounded intimidation without shame or compassion. Anybody who dared to challenge him became a victim of vicious and cruel public shaming. His former fixers went to jail. He got embolden. Mueller issued a report and he dispatched his fixer lawyer to Ukraine to pressure its president to investigate Joe Biden and withheld authorized military aid to the beleaguered country.
In his role as president he has doubled down on attacking any and all by humiliation and ridicule of the living and the dead. The list of devastating attacks on civil servants, ordinary citizen, asylum seekers, war heroes, and especially women, has been long and terrifying. The most authentic thing about the man has been his dividing the world into fixers and enemies. Russia has been in the former column. And the circle of his fixers has imploded to include much of his administration, the whole Republican Party, its elected leaders and voters. The den of fixers also includes shady faded lawyers, international crooks, and the mob of “Lock her up.”
The man in the White House just could not see beyond or through the thick of fixers how people like Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats could not be bullied. He kept shouting “socialism” and mocked the Speaker. He could not see the writing on the wall “the era of fixers is over.” House Democrats and its fearless wise Speaker stunned the fixers in Congress. They chose to uphold the Constitution and protect democracy. They send the clearest message that in America no one is above the law. They voted for impeachment. The abuse of power article was passed on a 230-197 vote. The obstruction article was passed by 229-198.
What’s next? If we the people of America could give Mitch McConnell some advice we would say to him and to his fellow fixers in the Senate to think again before they jumps to offer the man an immediate exoneration. Be advised that Speaker Pelosi and the House and the Senate Democrats are determined to vanquish the fixers. While the president is the smoking gun, Speaker Pelosi has emerged as the hero of democratic America and the most admired person in the free world. What a gift for this holy season.
